Do you find it harder to go to school in the summer?

By nancydinan

I wonder if my twelve years of summers off before college got me used to taking a nice long summer break. I’m finding it hard to get back to work! I feel like I studied really hard all year long, and I’m proud of what I accomplished, and now I just want to take my son to the pool by our house and grill on the back patio, and maybe if it gets too hot, we’d go to the library or see a movie. Instead, I need to get myself going. School started Monday, and I’m embarrassed to tell you I haven’t even really logged on or read a syllabus, and I’m usually the student who has all of this stuff printed out the second it goes up on Blackboard.

I tried to find statistics or anecdotal evidence about student motivation in summer quarter but didn’t come up with much. Does anybody else feel that your drive to study is inversely related to the amount of sunshine outside? I know the previous blogger Erin polled students about why they skipped class, and 13% checked the reply: “Nice weather – better to be outside.” Don’t you think that with the six months of winter we enjoy in Ohio we’d better soak up the sunshine while we can?

Of course, I’m just rationalizing. I think I’d better log on to Blackboard and introduce myself to my new classmates. Welcome back to school, everyone, and don’t forget that campus is closed this Friday and Saturday for Independence Day!

Definately feeling the lazy this quarter. its especially hard since my classes start at 8 am Q.Q But, theres nothing to do about it but to get up, grab a Sobe energy, and get to work.

I think its easier to just keep going after spring quarter. Although it sucks to wake up at 7 for an 8 am class i find it easier that since im already in the “school zone” to just keep going and get it over with. There is plenty of time after classes to go hangout with friends and do fun summer activities as well as work.

I’m better now that the quarter is in full swing. I was so ready for summer to start that I dragged my family to the pool, the zoo, Buckeye Lake… But I’m better now that we’re all exhausted.

As Autumn quarter begins I find myself longing for Summer quarter. The throngs of mulling sheepish High School graduates that have flooded onto campus in the last 2 days have me wishing it was May instead of September. It was challenging enough to return to school after 2 decades passing since I last turned in homework, I needed the more sedate environment of Summer quarter to build a strong foundation to build upon. Summer classes have an intimate quality to them without the nervous social atmosphere that Autumn quarter has brought to campus reminding me of everything I hated about High School. I caught rays in West Palm Beach last weekend after finals and did allot of Algebra at the pool this summer. When May comes around next summer I’ll be in class smiling as I pull out my sun bleached homework.
